It was the vision of our former honourable Chief Minister Kalvi Thanthai Thiru.K.Kamaraj to uplift the socially and economically backward district of Vellore to a vibrant place of learning and hence kick-started the Government College of Education, Vellore in the month of August 1956 with Tamil Nadu G.O Ms.No 117 /Education dated 23.06.1956. The college then became a co-Educational institution from the academic year 1991-92. A special mention must be made of Mr..S.Chittibabu, the first Principal of this college and famous educationalist, who then rose to the Vice-Chancellor of Annamalai University.
